The Sparta Free Library was built in 1902 with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie and designed in the Classical Revival style by Milwaukee architects Schick & Roth. Before the Carnegie building opened, the library occupied a series of temporary locations — the 1902 structure gave the institution its first permanent home. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since September 3, 1981 (reference no. 81000051), the building remains in active use as Sparta's public library. A recent expansion added larger multipurpose spaces for children and adults. In January 2026 the library adopted a fine-free lending policy to remove barriers for all patrons, and 24/7 outdoor pick-up lockers let cardholders retrieve holds on their own schedule. Wisconsin residents also access BadgerLink's curated databases, the Wisconsin Digital Library's Libby e-lending collection, and streaming films through Kanopy at no charge.
