The library serves River Falls, a city straddling Pierce and St. Croix counties in west-central Wisconsin near the Minnesota border, home to the University of Wisconsin–River Falls campus. Its history is rooted in community leadership: historian Jayne Hoffman documented its founding era in the book "River Falls Public Library: The Legacy of its Founding Mothers," commissioned by the River Falls Library Foundation. The library is part of Wisconsin's MORE Consortium, giving cardholders access to a broad shared catalog, and participates in the statewide BadgerLink network. In 2026 the library is in the public phase of its $7.5 million "Renew & Inspire" Capital Campaign — with a $4 million state grant already secured — to renovate and modernize the Union Street building.
