📖 About Algoma Public Library

The Algoma Public Library was first established in 1898, though it closed around 1905 before reopening in 1921. Since 1974 the library has occupied its current home at 406 Fremont Street in a building that once served as a teachers college — a setting that gives the library an architectural character uncommon in small Wisconsin communities. Located in the heart of Algoma on Kewaunee County's Lake Michigan shoreline, the library is attached to City Hall and adjacent to the elementary school, placing it at the literal center of civic life. Director Cathy Kolbeck leads a staff supported by a seven-member Board of Trustees and an active Friends of the Library organization whose Book Corner bookstore (401 Third Street, open Fridays and Saturdays) funds programming and equipment. The collection totals over 25,600 books, 1,693 audio items, and 4,443 video materials. In August 2026 alone, the library hosted 15 programs attracting 721 participants and circulated more than 2,200 physical items — strong numbers for a community of roughly 3,000 residents.
