Memorial Branch Library opened May 4, 1981, at 3222 Culebra Road on land that was originally part of a city park in San Antonio's west side. The facility was championed by Communities Organized for Public Service (COPS), the pioneering faith-based community-organizing group founded in 1974 that helped secure neighborhood improvements across San Antonio. The Library Board originally voted to name the branch for José Bernardo Maximiliano Gutiérrez de Lara, a Mexican-era governor, but the neighboring community requested a change; the branch was renamed to honor San Antonio's war dead, a tribute that remains at its heart today. The building expanded in 1995 and again in 1996 to 10,000 square feet, then underwent a transformative 2021-2022 renovation by Alta Architects — part of the City's 2017-2022 Bond Program — that introduced a transparent modern facade flooding the interior with natural light, a redesigned children's section, a dedicated Teen Center, and an upgraded community meeting room.
