📖 About East Branch Library

The East Branch on Gallatin Avenue is one of Nashville's original Carnegie libraries, opened May 8, 1919 with a $25,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. It was the fourth of Nashville's Carnegie libraries and was praised as an architectural gem when it debuted, built in a Classical-Revival style with a cut-limestone exterior. Inside, the building keeps its historic character with a marble foyer, large chandeliers, and oak tables and chairs. Having survived floods and tornadoes over the decades, it was carefully restored in 2000, reversing mid-century renovations from the 1960s and returning the interior toward its original appearance. The branch is a Metro Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains one of only a handful of surviving Carnegie public library buildings in the city and a well-used neighborhood anchor in East Nashville.
