📖 About Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library
The Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library serves Vermillion, South Dakota, the seat of Clay County and home to the University of South Dakota. Its origins trace to January 13, 1902, when roughly 100 residents gathered at the Masonic Hall to found a public library. The following year Andrew Carnegie granted $10,000 for a building, and the Vermillion Public Library opened in a dedicated Carnegie structure. The City of Vermillion and Clay County have supported it ever since. In 1978 a new building was constructed adjacent to the original Carnegie structure. Then in early 2010, an ambitious expansion project began: completed in April 2013, it added 11,110 square feet in a north addition (first floor and basement) and 780 more square feet on the south end to accommodate the children's area. The renovated building also gained a youth room, a computer room and a second meeting room. On completion the library was officially renamed the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library in honor of a longtime community benefactor. Today it operates with the mission to expand minds, empower people and enrich community, offering programs, rooms for reservation, mobile printing, electronic resources and a vibrant Friends-run used-book sale called Edie's Bookshop.
