The Story of the Library in San Juan

The Biblioteca Nacional de Puerto Rico traces its origin to the Biblioteca General de Puerto Rico, created by Ley Núm. 44 of June 6, 1967. It was formally designated the National Library by Ley Núm. 188 of August 17, 2003, and is charged with acquiring and preserving Puerto Rican bibliography — works written and published on the island or abroad by Puerto Rican authors or about Puerto Rican topics. It shares the Edificio Dr. Ricardo Alegría on Avenida de la Constitución in Puerta de Tierra with the Archivo General de Puerto Rico.

The San Juan Community Library was established as a nonprofit organization in October 1987 and describes itself as the only bilingual lending library open to the public in the capital city. Operating from a former community center within the BUCAPLAA recreational park, it maintains roughly 32,000 physical bilingual titles alongside a growing digital collection.
