📖 About Gila Valley Library
The Gila Valley Library was born in 2004 when founding director Phyllis Reiche opened it in a storage room of Gila's community center, determined to serve the Cliff-Gila Valley's frontier community. She obtained New Mexico State Library accreditation in 2008, and in 2012 the library relocated to donated space at 411 Highway 211 — a spot between the post office and the Hidalgo Medical Services clinic — provided at minimal cost by Hidalgo Medical Services. The library's mission is to promote literacy and lifelong learning by providing interactive children's programming and varied creative resources for adults that reflect the diversity of this remote corner of Grant County. Current director Esti Gutierrez, who took the helm in June 2024, carries forward that mission alongside assistant children's director Marykate Fowler. The library holds an extensive Southwest history collection, a large DVD section, eBooks and streaming, and two youth murals (completed 2010 and 2012) celebrating the Gila River's ecology. Outside, a demonstration garden and community forestry project with interpretive walking paths serves as an outdoor classroom. A Southwest Seed Library, a weather station and an art gallery round out its offerings. Support comes from the NM Library Foundation, United Way, Grant County Community Foundation, Rotary Club of Silver City and Freeport-McMoRan.
