📖 About Martha Liebert Public Library
Martha Liebert Public Library traces its founding to February 1965, when seven Bernalillo mothers — Martha Liebert, Helen Elliott, Judy Blum, Stella Hill, Socorro Romero, Nora Frank, and Dorothy Darnell — collected donated books from neighbors, schools, and churches to create a library their community deserved. Beginning in a north room at City Hall with the VFW's help to build shelving, the library was officially incorporated in October 1966. Over the following decades it moved through several homes before settling into the restored Roosevelt Building in 2017 — a historic 1930s WPA-era structure in the heart of Bernalillo. In November 1997 the library's Southwest Room was formally dedicated in honor of Martha Liebert herself, recognizing her pivotal role in building something out of nothing through pure community will. Today the library welcomes more than 15,000 visitors annually and delivers over 200 programs per year for children, teens, adults, and seniors, including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for young readers and the Young Renaissance Scholars Program. It has been recognized as a Bernalillo cultural center and received a national award for community impact.
