📖 About Belen Public Library

Belen, the seat of Valencia County, earned its nickname 'Hub City' from its strategic position at the crossing of the AT&SF mainline and the Belen Cutoff — a junction that made it one of the busiest railroad towns in the Southwest. The library at 333 Becker Avenue reflects that heritage: it is administered by the same City of Belen department that oversees the Belen Harvey House Museum, a restored 1910 Santa Fe Railroad dining facility that operated Harvey Girls through World War II, was donated to the city by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1982, and opened as a public museum in April 1985. The library itself offers residents and visitors a comprehensive resource hub staffed by six specialists covering children's, teen, adult, and reference services. Programs range from adult Tai Chi classes and craft clubs to children's storytimes and seasonal reading challenges. Patrons have access to El Portal, the New Mexico State Library's free database gateway covering newspapers, magazines, academic journals, and encyclopedias.
