📖 About Nutley Public Library
The Nutley Public Library traces its roots to 1896, when a private subscription library opened in a building donated by James R. Hay near the Nutley Railroad Station. In 1914 an Andrew Carnegie grant funded a purpose-built public library at 93 Booth Drive, designed by Armstrong and DeGelleke, which became the Nutley Free Public Library. The building gained a three-story addition in 1942 (funded by the Federal Works Project Administration) and was expanded again in 1990 by James Goldstein and Associates to its current 20,000 square feet, while preserving the original Carnegie structure's appearance. Today the library holds approximately 90,000 items — 65,000 adult and reference volumes plus 25,000 children's books, along with audiobooks, large-print editions, music, videos, magazines and digital materials. In 1996 the library joined the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), giving cardholders access to the shared BCCLS catalog and the Open Borrowing reciprocal program. Eight museum passes — including the American Museum of Natural History, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and Frick Collection — are available at the circulation desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
