📖 About Margate City Public Library

The library traces its roots to a January 1961 meeting of the Margate PTA Child Study Group at the home of Mrs. Fred Weber, where residents rallied to establish a permanent library for the community. The Margate branch of the Atlantic County Library formally opened in 1963 with the support of Atlantic County librarian Roland Scott, who saw it as a vital complement to the bookmobile that had previously served the area. Today the library at 8100 Atlantic Avenue holds roughly 69,000 volumes and serves a year-round population of about 6,354 residents — a figure that swells considerably during the summer shore season. A well-used amenity is the museum pass program: cardholders can borrow passes to the Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia), Eastern State Penitentiary, Chanticleer Garden (Wayne, PA), and the Independence Seaport Museum. The library also maintains the Margate Beacon Archives, a gradually restored digital collection of the city's historic newspaper.
