📖 About Englewood Public Library

Englewood Public Library opened its current home on Engle Street in September 1968, replacing a Carnegie Library that had served the community since 1915. Architect Delnoce Whitney Goubert designed the striking circular structure using two rings of exposed concrete columns supporting a 28-foot vaulted roof — a design that won recognition from the New Jersey Ready-Mixed Concrete Association and the American Concrete Institute as one of New Jersey's outstanding concrete structures of 1968. The building's circular floor plan allows the central circulation desk to maintain visual sightlines across the entire radial book stack on both floors. The library holds approximately 98,857 volumes and circulates roughly 199,190 items annually. As a member of BCCLS (Bridging Communities, Connecting Library Services), established in 1979, Englewood cardholders can borrow from all 62 Bergen County public libraries. The Literacy Department serves adults in Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, and Leonia who need Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language support — all free of charge.

What is special about the Englewood Public Library building?

The library's circular building, designed by architect Delnoce Whitney Goubert and opened in September 1968, is a rare example of exposed-concrete modernist library architecture. Its two rings of concrete columns support a 28-foot vaulted roof without central structural supports, flooding the interior with natural light. The design was recognized by the New Jersey Ready-Mixed Concrete Association as one of the outstanding concrete structures built in New Jersey in 1968, and the building remains largely intact today.
