The Columbus County Public Library is headquartered at 407 N. JK Powell Boulevard in Whiteville, the county seat of Columbus County in southeastern North Carolina. Whiteville was founded in 1810 by James Bunbury White — originally spelled 'Whitesville' before the Post Office changed it to 'Whiteville' in 1889 — and is home to the Columbus County Courthouse (National Register of Historic Places, 1983) and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville satellite location. The library system serves Columbus County's diverse population of approximately 55,000 residents through its Whiteville main branch and additional branches in Chadbourn, Fair Bluff, Lake Waccamaw, Riegelwood and Tabor City.
