About Union County Library

Union County Library traces its roots to March 1930, when a dedicated committee of five women opened the first library in Monroe in the northeast corner of the old Courthouse. Operating on limited county funds, the library received a significant boost in 1937 when the Works Progress Administration assumed operation, initiating bookmobile services that brought books to rural residents throughout the county. By 1939 the County Commissioners appointed the first formal library board, and branch libraries in Waxhaw and Marshville joined the Monroe library to form the Union County Public Library System.

Today the main library at 316 E Windsor Street in Monroe anchors a growing system that reflects the dramatic growth of Union County as one of North Carolina's fastest-expanding counties. The library offers a robust collection of print and digital materials, with cardholders accessing Libby for eBooks and audiobooks, Kanopy for streaming films, and NCLive's statewide databases. Community programs serve children, teens, and adults year-round, making Union County Library an essential resource for the region.
