📖 About Missouri River Regional Library
The library's story begins in 1871, when Jefferson City residents first discussed a circulating library. After several earlier attempts, a subscription library opened in the courthouse basement on March 1, 1898. The pivotal moment came when Reverend John Fenton Hendy and attorney Arthur M. Hough secured a $25,000 Carnegie pledge, and on June 19, 1900, voters approved a property tax to sustain it (839 to 42). The Carnegie Free Public Library was formally dedicated on December 23, 1902, with classical-style architecture and a 450-seat auditorium. In 1947, the system became a county library and launched a bookmobile — one of Missouri's earliest. The library was renamed Missouri River Regional Library in 1994. Today MRRL operates two locations — the main branch in Jefferson City and the Osage County branch in Linn — and offers services that range from 3D printing and test proctoring to free notarization available to any community member.
