❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Desloge named after a French family, and what does that have to do with its library?
The city takes its name from the Desloge family, French immigrants whose Desloge Consolidated Lead Company made the area one of the nation's principal lead-mining centers. Firmin V. Desloge II established operations here in the 1870s; the city was incorporated in 1941 after the St. Joe Lead Company acquired the operation in 1929. The public library grew from that same civic identity — a resource the incorporated city has maintained for residents of this St. Francois County community.
How many books can I check out, and for how long?
The Desloge Public Library allows patrons to check out up to 10 books per visit. Adult and children's books and audiobooks have a 2-week loan period; magazines may be borrowed for 3 days. Reference materials are for in-library use only.
When is Story Time, and is it only for toddlers?
Story Time runs Thursdays from 10:00 to 10:45 am, September through May, and is open to children from birth through age 10. It is offered free and no registration is required — just stop in on Thursday morning.
