Hamtramck Public Library traces its roots to November 1918, when the Tau Beta Association opened a small community house library in a single room called 'The Flat' on Hanley Avenue, with Miss Isabella McRae as the first librarian. As waves of Polish, Yemeni, Bangladeshi, and other immigrant communities settled in Hamtramck over the following century, the library expanded its foreign-language collections — today offering books, magazines, and newspapers in multiple languages alongside robust digital resources. The library holds approximately 69,000 volumes and circulates nearly 56,000 items annually. It is a member of The Library Network (TLN), giving cardholders access to shared resources across southeast Michigan, and provides digital services through Kanopy streaming video, OverDrive/Libby eBooks, and Hoopla. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, after-school tutoring, and cultural programming reflect the library's enduring role as a gateway for new Americans.
