📖 About Grosse Pointe Public Library
The Grosse Pointe Public Library system was established in June 1929 by the School District, growing from Wayne County Library reading stations that had opened in 1928 — including a station in a confectionery store on Mack Avenue and another in a municipal building basement. In January 1929, a fifth station opened in the Farms Municipal Building on Kerby Road, the seed of what became the Central Library. The permanent Central Library at 10 Kercheval Avenue in Grosse Pointe Farms opened in 1953, designed by the Hungarian-American Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer — the only building he designed in the Detroit area — with a Kandinsky-inspired woven tapestry and an Alexander Calder mobile commissioned for the main reading room. Two branch libraries followed: the Ewald Branch (15175 E. Jefferson Ave., Grosse Pointe Park, 2005, 15,500 sq ft) and the Woods Branch (20680 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods, 2006, featuring a see-through fireplace, freshwater aquarium and floating staircase). All three branches offer free Wi-Fi, public computers and access to the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and Michigan Activity Pass.
