📖 About Grand Ledge Area District Library
The Grand Ledge Area District Library (GLADL) traces its roots to September 1911, when members of the Tabard Inn Association and community women formed the Ladies Library Association, opening a collection of 60 books in a downtown second-floor room that December — initially available Saturday afternoons only. The City Council provided space and utilities by 1912, and the collection grew to 2,100 volumes by 1918. After a voter-approved millage in 1921, banker George N. Berry donated the East Jefferson Street site; construction began in 1931 using classical architecture with a green tile roof, and the building was formally dedicated on November 7, 1931. A 1961 expansion funded by Emily Shipman's estate ($90,000) created the Shipman Room, and the library went fully computerized in 1991. On July 1, 2000, the library transitioned to district status — GLADL — incorporating the school district, Oneida Township and the City of Grand Ledge. Major 2017 renovations added a mezzanine, elevator, LED lighting and accessibility improvements, and a 2022 millage restoration vote enabled the library to eliminate late fines and expand services across its main Grand Ledge building and Wacousta Branch.
