📖 About Armada Free Public Library

The Armada Free Public Library has anchored the village of Armada since 1915, when the community's enduring love of literature helped persuade Andrew Carnegie to donate $8,000 toward a permanent building. The grant alone didn't cover costs, so residents stepped up: they donated 128 loads of gravel and staged a minstrel show to close the funding gap, creating a library that is genuinely community-built. Today the library holds more than 25,000 items — books, audiobooks, films, digital magazines and e-books — and belongs to the Suburban Library Cooperative, connecting cardholders to the statewide MeL network for interlibrary loans from Michigan's largest libraries. A dedicated genealogy collection supported by the Armada Genealogical Society makes it a destination for local-history research throughout northeastern Macomb County.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Armada Free Public Library really a Carnegie library?

Yes. In 1915 the community's demonstrated interest in literature persuaded Andrew Carnegie's foundation to donate $8,000 toward a permanent library building on Church Street. Because the grant fell short of the full construction cost, residents made up the difference by donating 128 loads of gravel and organizing a minstrel show — making it a genuinely community-built Carnegie library, one of about 1,600 that still stand across the United States.

Can I use the library if I live outside Armada village limits?

Yes. The Armada Free Public Library is a public library that serves all residents of Macomb County. Cardholders also receive a MILibraryCard that gives access to materials from other Michigan libraries through MeLCat, the statewide interlibrary loan network.

Does the library have genealogy resources?

Yes. The library maintains a dedicated genealogy collection that includes local and regional historical materials, and the Armada Genealogical Society actively supports research efforts. Digital genealogy tools, including MyHeritage Library Edition, are also available free through the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) statewide portal.

What are the latest hours the library is open during the week?

The library stays open until 8 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday hours are 9 am–5 pm and Saturday is 10 am–2 pm. The library is closed on Sunday.
