The Story of the Library in Wailuku
Wailuku Public Library was the first public library in Maui County, tracing its roots to the Maui County Free Library established by the Maui Women's Club in 1919. Its distinctive current building at 251 High Street was designed by Maui-born architect C. W. Dickey and completed in 1928, opening to the public in 1929. With its low, sheltering double-pitched hipped roof and residential scale, the library reads more like a gracious home than a civic building — a hallmark of Dickey's regional Hawaiian style.
The library sits within the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, alongside other Dickey-designed structures, and remains a working branch of the Hawaii State Public Library System today, serving as the principal library for central Maui.
