Millis (originally East Medway) got its library in 1885 when a local library society donated its books and funds to create the Millis Free Public Library in the newly built Lansing Mills Memorial Building — itself erected the same year that Lansing Mills incorporated the town. The library moved through several locations, including a 1964 Auburn Street building, before the community approved a major capital project funded in part by a Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners construction grant. Oudens Ello Architecture designed the current 18,000-square-foot LEED-certified facility at 961 Main Street (Route 109), which opened in 2013 and tripled the size of its predecessor. The single-level layout centres on a circular desk with sightlines to all areas, and a C-shaped footprint creates an internal reading garden with natural light throughout. The library is a member of the Minuteman Library Network and offers a free notary service, museum passes and a robust digital collection.
