📖 About Attleboro Public Library

The Attleboro Public Library is the public library of Attleboro, Massachusetts, a Bristol County city near the Rhode Island line long known for its jewelry industry. The library association began in 1885, but the present building opened in November 1907 on land donated by jewelry manufacturer Joseph L. Sweet, who also left a permanent endowment; his gift required a building worth at least $25,000, though construction ultimately cost roughly $85,000. The architectural firm MacLean and Wright won a design competition and Grant Brothers built it, with a horseshoe-shaped main desk, separate children's and adult reading rooms, and a second-floor gallery and meeting room. Major rear additions came in the 1960s and '70s, an extensive renovation in the early 1990s added room for about 50,000 more volumes, and the building was modernized again in 2020–2021. Today the library is part of the SAILS Library Network, so one free card borrows across dozens of area libraries and unlocks eBooks and the Commonwealth's statewide databases; it also maintains local history, genealogy materials and a digital Sun Chronicle newspaper archive.
