📖 About Morgan City Public Library
The Morgan City Public Library traces its roots to Thanksgiving afternoon, 1934, when the Morgan City Women's Club secured funding and space from the city, gathered citizen donations, and opened a reading room in the one hundred block of Everett Street. Seventeen years later, in 1951, voters approved a tax to build a permanent facility — the library's present home at 220 Everett Street. In 1979, a separate annex was added to house the Morgan City Archives, a collection of historical documents, photographs, periodicals, and microfilm that records the life of this bayou city on the Atchafalaya River. When the Archives relocated to the Leah Norman Schreier Center in 2001, the library expanded into that space for its Louisiana and genealogy collections. Today the library holds some 37,000 volumes and serves roughly 11,000 residents, operating as one of just four municipal public libraries in the state — distinguished from parish library systems by its direct city governance. Cardholders gain free access to the Louisiana Library Connection's statewide databases, live online tutoring through Homework Louisiana, and a robust collection of eBooks and audiobooks.
