Mason City Public Library serves Mason City, Iowa, the county seat of Cerro Gordo County and a city of approximately 27,338 residents in north-central Iowa, about 120 miles north of Des Moines. The library building at 225 2nd Street SE was designed by Chicago architects Holabird and Root in 1939, giving the institution an architectural legacy that complements the city's famous Prairie School heritage (Frank Lloyd Wright's Park Inn Hotel, the only surviving Wright-designed hotel, stands nearby). Mason City is the real hometown behind Meredith Willson's musical The Music Man and its fictional 'River City,' and it was the last stop before the fatal 1959 plane crash that took Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.
