📖 About Morrisson-Reeves Library

Morrisson-Reeves Library is the public library of Richmond, Indiana, in Wayne County near the Ohio state line. It opened on July 30, 1864, after early resident Robert Morrisson gave $12,000 for a lot at North A and 6th Streets plus $5,000 for roughly 6,000 books, deeding it to Wayne Township "for the benefit of its inhabitants forever" — making it the first township library in Indiana. In January 1893 Caroline Middleton Reeves donated $30,000 in memory of her husband Mark E. Reeves, and the library took its current hyphenated name. The present 52,800-square-foot building opened in 1975 and preserves keepsakes from the earlier structures, including the historic "Morrisson-Reeves Library" sign, marble columns and the 1912 Bimbo Memorial Fountain. The library is a member of the statewide Evergreen Indiana consortium, so a Richmond card borrows across dozens of participating Indiana libraries.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Morrisson-Reeves Library called the oldest township library in Indiana?

It opened on July 30, 1864 after Robert Morrisson deeded a lot and about 6,000 books to Wayne Township "for the benefit of its inhabitants forever." That township trust is why it is considered the first township library in Indiana, and the library has served Richmond continuously ever since.

Where did the hyphenated Morrisson-Reeves name come from?

In January 1893 Caroline Middleton Reeves donated $30,000 to the library in memory of her husband, Richmond merchant and banker Mark E. Reeves, and their son Arthur. In recognition of that gift the institution was renamed Morrisson-Reeves Library, combining its founder's name with the Reeves family.

What can I research in the library's genealogy and local-history collection?

Morrisson-Reeves keeps a dedicated genealogy and local-history collection focused on Richmond and Wayne County, with materials on family biographies, Revolutionary War patriots and the city's industrial heritage. A separate local-history site maintained by the library's history team documents the building and community as well.

Which nights is the library open late, and is it open on weekends?

The library is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday hours run 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays; check the website for holiday hours.
