Set in the heart of Elberton — the self-proclaimed Granite Capital of the World — the Elbert County Public Library at 345 Heard Street has served the county's 19,000 residents since its formal establishment in 1968, when Elbert and Hart counties pooled resources after a fire destroyed much of Hart County's collection. 📖 About Elbert County Public Library
The Elbert County Public Library was established in 1968 through an unusual act of regional solidarity: after a fire destroyed most of the Hart County library's collection, Elbert and Hart counties agreed to merge their resources under the name War Woman Regional Library System. Elbert County later established its own independent system, which today operates from the main branch at 345 Heard Street in Elberton and a second branch at the Bowman Library (21 Prince Avenue, Bowman, GA). Elberton itself is internationally known as the Granite Capital of the World — the blue-grey granite quarried in Elbert County is shipped to every continent and used in monuments, headstones and public buildings worldwide. The library serves the county's roughly 19,000 residents with more than 20 public computers, a children's programming room, genealogy resources, a bookmobile for daycares and nursing homes, and full access to the PINES statewide circulation network and GALILEO's 100+ research databases.
