📖 About North Miami Public Library
The North Miami Public Library is the independent municipal library of the City of North Miami, a distinct city in Miami-Dade County with its own library system separate from the county's MDPLS branches. It began in 1932 through the Biscayne Park Woman's Club, operated on donations and membership fees until 1948, and became a fully free public library funded under Florida Statutes in 1949. A permanent 10,000-square-foot facility opened in 1965 with 6,000 volumes; a 1981 expansion brought the building to 11,200 square feet, and a $1.3 million renovation completed in 1991 expanded it to over 23,000 square feet. Today the library holds more than 60,000 items — fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, newspapers, videos, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs — and offers free digital access to eBooks, eAudiobooks and downloadable music through the Florida Electronic Library and other state-funded resources.
