📚 About the Miami-Dade Public Library System

The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) is one of the largest public library systems in the Southeast, serving a population of more than 2.7 million across roughly 1,900 square miles of Miami-Dade County, Florida. Its roots reach back to the Lemon City Reading Room in 1894 and the Coconut Grove Reading Room in 1895, and the modern county-wide system was formed in 1971 when city and county libraries joined forces. Today MDPLS operates about 50 locations — anchored by the Main Library inside the Philip Johnson-designed Miami-Dade Cultural Center at 101 West Flagler Street, plus four regional libraries built in South, West, North, and Northeast Dade. A single free card works at every branch, and the system serves well over a million registered borrowers. The cities of Hialeah, Homestead, North Miami, and North Miami Beach run their own municipal libraries but their residents may also use MDPLS services.
