About Bemis Public Library
The Bemis Public Library has been a cornerstone of Littleton, Colorado since 1892, when volunteer firefighters from the Littleton Hose Company used a $200 gift from the Santa Fe Railroad to purchase the city's first books. That spirit of community generosity has defined the library ever since.
The current building at 6014 South Datura Street was dedicated in October 1965 and named in honor of Edwin A. Bemis, longtime editor of the Littleton Independent newspaper and a passionate advocate for public education and access to knowledge. Today, the library serves as the sole public library for the City of Littleton, welcoming residents of all ages with an extensive collection, vibrant programs, and modern amenities.
Through the Marmot Consortium, Bemis connects patrons to over 274,000 items — including 60,497+ ebooks — shared across participating Colorado libraries. With 38 public computer terminals, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and 722 community programs per year attended by more than 16,000 participants, Bemis is far more than a place to borrow books — it is Littleton's living room.
✓ Fine-Free Library! As of April 2023, Bemis Public Library eliminated all overdue fines. The Littleton City Council voted unanimously to repeal late charges — making it easier than ever for everyone to return materials and keep borrowing without penalty.
