📖 About Gilpin County Public Library

The Gilpin County Public Library is the public library district serving Gilpin County, Colorado, perched at roughly 9,000 feet in the Front Range foothills above Denver. Gilpin County was the epicenter of Colorado's 1859 gold rush, and the library today carries that community tradition forward with a broad collection, robust digital resources and a mission to offer 'prompt and friendly service in a welcoming environment.' The library's AspenCat catalog connects it to Colorado's statewide digital library network, giving cardholders access to eBooks, audiobooks, films and comics. Its Cultural Pass program is a standout benefit: cardholders can reserve free passes to the Denver Botanic Gardens, Butterfly Pavilion, Colorado Railroad Museum and Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado Boulder. A Homebound Delivery program, funded by the Alan Green Memorial Foundation, brings library materials to county residents who cannot visit in person.

The Homebound Delivery program brings library materials monthly to Gilpin County residents who cannot visit due to age, disability or illness and have no other way to pick up items. Why is Gilpin County historically significant in Colorado?

Gilpin County was the epicenter of Colorado's 1859 Pike's Peak Gold Rush, drawing thousands of prospectors to the Black Hawk and Central City area. The wealth from those mines funded much of early Colorado's development. The area later became famous for its casinos — Colorado's limited-stakes gaming is concentrated in Black Hawk and Central City to this day.
