📖 About Van Nuys Branch Library
Van Nuys Branch Library has served the heart of the San Fernando Valley since 1911, the same year the community of Van Nuys was founded. The current mid-century building at 6250 Sylmar Ave opened on May 11, 1964 as part of the Van Nuys Civic Center complex. For decades the branch also served as headquarters for LAPL's Traveling Branch bookmobile, which circulated nearly 250,000 volumes annually to underserved Valley communities. A $1.9 million renovation completed in October 2021 brought a redesigned interior with a new Young Adult study area, upgraded children's spaces, a consolidated service desk, self-service kiosks, a high-resolution scanner, and new flooring, lighting, and restrooms. Today the branch is a bilingual anchor for one of Los Angeles's most diverse neighborhoods — Van Nuys is over 53 percent Latino, with many residents born in Mexico and El Salvador — offering extensive Spanish-language collections, Cybernauts one-on-one technology help, and a Zine Collection added in Fall 2024.
