The Los Feliz Branch Library has served this hillside community at the foot of Griffith Park since 1923, becoming LAPL's 36th branch in 1924. After decades in a cramped storefront known locally as 'A Hole in the Wall,' the branch reopened on April 8, 1999 in architect Barton Phelps's award-winning 10,500-square-foot building — funded by the 1989 Library Bond and donations from the DiCaprio family and the Walt Disney Company Foundation. The building was constructed on the exact site of Leonardo DiCaprio's childhood home; his family donated $35,000 to fund the Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center, which still features autographed movie posters and personal mementos from the actor. Inside, warm redwood walls, pyramidal skylights, and a children's area entered through a tree-trunk archway create an inviting space, while a dome-shaped teen reading room displays artist Joyce Dallal's public artwork 'Conjunction of 500 Wishes.' With over 56,000 items and a robust program schedule, the branch serves one of Los Angeles's most densely populated and creatively active communities.
