📖 About Lincoln Heights Branch Library

The Lincoln Heights Branch opened in August 1916 as the "Northeast Branch," built with funds from Andrew Carnegie's 1911 gift to the Los Angeles Public Library and designed by architects Lester H. Hibbard and H.B. Cody in an Italian Renaissance and Classical Revival style. Its unusual quarter-circle plan, high clerestory windows, Old English oak shelving, and outdoor reading garden set it apart from more conventional branch buildings of its era. Renamed the Lincoln Heights Branch by 1919, it received a bas-relief sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in 1922, and in 1975 the community adopted the additional name "Biblioteca del Pueblo de Lincoln Heights" to reflect its largely Spanish-speaking neighborhood. The building was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 261 in 1983 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. After sustaining damage in the 1987 earthquake, it underwent a roughly $3 million seismic rehabilitation completed in 1996 that expanded it to about 12,900 square feet while preserving its historic character.
