The Allied Gardens/Benjamin Branch Library first opened in 1965, funded in part by a bequest from Edwin A. Benjamin, a San Diego resident and dedicated book enthusiast who left a legacy that would benefit generations of community readers. The original building was expanded significantly in the mid-1980s and reopened in 1986 with increased space and updated facilities. Today the branch serves the Allied Gardens and Del Cerro neighborhoods with a full collection, nine public computers, free Wi-Fi, and an outdoor patio for quiet reading. A 49-person meeting room hosts community events, civic gatherings, and library programs throughout the year.
