📖 About Palo Verde Library
Palo Verde Library opened in January 2006 in Phoenix's Maryvale neighborhood, replacing an original branch that had served the community since 1966. Designed by Gould Evans in association with Wendell Burnette Architects, the 16,000-square-foot building sits within the Maryvale Community Complex alongside a 27,000-square-foot community center and Maryvale Pool — a deliberate pairing the architects called 'mind and body.' A pedestrian promenade of Arizona Ash trees ties the library, community center, and shaded parking together in an east-west axis, while native Palo Verde trees give the library its name and cool the parking areas. The complex anchors a 14-acre park that is the green heart of Maryvale, one of Phoenix's most densely populated and predominantly Latino neighborhoods. Since opening, Palo Verde has ranked as the second-highest-traffic branch in the Phoenix Public Library system, and teen volunteerism grew over 600 percent in its first year. Library Journal named it one of 10 New Landmark Libraries in 2011, and it received the 2009 AIA/ALA National Library Building Honor Award.
