📖 About Ak-Chin Indian Community Library
The Ak-Chin Indian Community Library serves the O'odham-speaking Ak-Chin Indian Community, whose name translates as "mouth of the wash" — a reference to the Santa Cruz Valley wash system that made this 22,000-acre desert land agriculturally rich. Opened in 2009 as part of a purpose-built Library and Education Center at 46521 W Farrell Road, the library combines traditional public-library services with a commitment to cultural continuity and youth development. The facility houses a broad print and media collection alongside up-to-date public computers, free Wi-Fi, dedicated teen and youth areas, meeting rooms, and education specialist offices for tutoring. It received the 2013 Guardians of Culture and Lifeways Library Institutional Excellence Award from the American Indian Library Association, recognizing outstanding and visionary work in tribal community librarianship. A library card is free; non-tribal Maricopa City residents can obtain guest passes. The library also lends Chromebooks and hotspots to support higher-education students.
