📖 About Clark County Library
Clark County Library traces its roots to November 11, 1897, when about thirty Arkadelphia women formed the Woman's Library Association with a bold goal: build a public library for their town. Through oyster suppers, bazaars, spelling bees, and fiddlers' contests they raised nearly $1,000, secured a building loan, and hired Little Rock architect Charles L. Thompson to design a one-story Classical Revival brick structure with an oversized Ionic-columned portico. The building opened in 1903 — and in 1905, William Jennings Bryan gave a benefit lecture that helped retire the last of the construction debt. The Woman's Library Association ran the library until 1939, when they donated the building to the City of Arkadelphia; Clark County took over governance in 1974, the same year the building earned its National Register listing. Today the system serves the county through the main Arkadelphia branch and the Cabe Public Library in Gurdon, offering free library cards to all residents and Henderson State University students.
