📖 About Irondale Public Library
The Irondale Public Library was organized in 1951 when the Jefferson County Free Library donated 800 volumes and Emma Lee Heritage was hired as the first librarian, initially operating in a rented space next to a barber shop on 1st Avenue. When Irondale City Hall opened in 1957, the library moved into its south wing, and it later settled at 105 20th Street South near City Hall — a space it occupied for over 50 years. In December 2022 the city purchased a wooded 7.9-acre site on Grants Mill Road, broke ground in April 2024, and opened the $7 million, 16,000-square-foot new building on October 11, 2025, drawing hundreds of residents to the grand opening. The library is one of the founding members of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative, meaning one free card gives access to more than 40 branches across the county.
