📖 About Gardendale-Martha Moore Public Library
Gardendale-Martha Moore Public Library traces its roots to the summer of 1958, when community member Martha C. Moore championed a permanent local library for Gardendale's children. The city council responded in 1959 by dedicating shelf space in the police chief's office for the first collection. Over the following decades the library occupied five different locations before moving into its current purpose-built home. A major expansion completed in December 2012 added nearly 5,000 square feet, bringing the facility to 12,642 square feet and creating a dedicated wing for Teen and Children's Services. Today the library belongs to the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC), giving Gardendale cardholders access to collections at all 22 member branches throughout the county. The library's mission — providing quality materials and programs for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and entertainment — shapes programming that ranges from educational adult workshops to children's story times and teen activities.
