📖 About Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County
Anniston's first permanent public library opened in 1918 with Carnegie Foundation funding and a land donation from local property owner R. E. Garner. Around the same time, the Calhoun County Traveling Library launched service across the county through small station stops, eventually settling into a dedicated building in 1950. In 1964 the two systems agreed to merge, and on August 1, 1966, the combined Liles Memorial Library opened on the old Carnegie site — funded by a $150,000 gift from the Liles trust, matching federal Library Services and Construction Act funds, and city contributions. That building laid the foundation of today's Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County. The library system now includes the Main Library on East 10th Street, the Carver Branch at 722 West 14th Street, and a bookmobile serving rural Calhoun County. A standout feature is the Carver Branch recording studio — available free to any cardholder aged 14 and up — equipped with microphones, a keyboard, electronic drums, and a computer for music production.
