About Madison Public Library Central
The Madison Public Library Central branch, located at 201 W Mifflin Street in the Capitol Square neighborhood, is the hub of Madison's award-winning public library system. Founded in 1875, it is one of Wisconsin's oldest and most celebrated public libraries. The building sits just blocks from the Wisconsin State Capitol and is a gathering place for students, researchers, families, and the broader Madison community. Its extensive collection spans physical and digital materials covering nearly every subject.
Madison Public Library is renowned for its innovative programming, from maker spaces and teen tech labs to author events and cultural festivals. Cardholders enjoy seamless digital access through Libby/OverDrive, Hoopla, and Kanopy. The library is a member of the South Central Library System (SCLS), enabling resource sharing with over 50 libraries across south-central Wisconsin.
