📖 About Mead Public Library
Mead Public Library was established in 1897 through a $20,000 bequest from James H. Mead, a prominent Sheboygan banker and businessman who died in 1891 and directed the funds toward 'the amusement and literary culture of young men.' With additional support from Andrew Carnegie, the library moved into its first dedicated building in 1904. The current structure at 710 North 8th Street opened in 1974; a major renovation from 1996 to 1998 added a third floor with a children's room featuring panoramic views of the city. Today Mead serves as headquarters for the Monarch Library System, which spans Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Dodge, and Washington counties and collectively holds over two million items. Its Imaginarium Makerspace — funded in part by the Kohler Foundation and the Green Bay Packers Community Foundation — offers free access to 3D printers, laser engravers, sewing machines, Cricut cutters, digitization equipment, and Adobe Creative Cloud for teens and adults. The Experience Collection adds museum passes, seed packs, take-home tools, and technology kits that patrons can borrow like books. An outdoor after-hours pick-up locker installed in 2024 lets cardholders collect holds any time of day.
