📖 About Georgetown Public Library
Founded in 1967 by community volunteers organized as the Friends of the Library, Georgetown Public Library became a city department in 1987 and opened its current two-story, 49,500-square-foot home on January 20, 2007 — its fourth location and third purpose-built building. The library earned the nation's highest library honor, the IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Service, in 2018, recognized for innovative community outreach, its signature WOW!Mobile bookmobile (launched 2012), a fine-free borrowing policy that automatically renews items, and a Little Lemon on-site café that transforms the building into a true community living room. La Esquina Latina, the library's dedicated Spanish-language resource section, offers curated bilingual materials, health information, and digital learning tools for Georgetown's Hispanic community. The library is a TexShare member, serves a population of nearly 50,000, and circulates more than 650,000 items annually.

Rooms can be reserved for up to two hours, four times per month, booked up to two months in advance online, in person or by phone. The library also rents larger meeting rooms for events.
Why did Georgetown Public Library win the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service?
The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded Georgetown Public Library the National Medal — the nation's highest library honor — in May 2018, citing its innovative, community-centered approach built on three principles: Trust, Turning Outward, and Collateral Benefits. Specific innovations recognized included the WOW!Mobile bookmobile (launched 2012, the only mobile library service in Williamson County), a fine-free lending policy, outreach programs at Sun City, and a dedicated Fine Arts Librarian. Director Eric Lashley accepted the award at a ceremony at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.
What is the WOW!Mobile and who does it serve?
WOW!Mobile (Words on Wheels Bookmobile) is Georgetown Public Library's mobile service, launched around 2012 and celebrating its 10th anniversary in April 2022. The bookmobile carries thousands of books for children, teens, and adults — including bestsellers, large print titles, CDs, and DVDs — and makes regular monthly stops throughout Georgetown, including at Sun City Georgetown for seniors. It is the only mobile library service in Williamson County. Patrons can request items not on the bookmobile through in-person, online, or telephone holds. The monthly schedule is posted at the library's website.
Does Georgetown Public Library charge overdue fees?
No. Georgetown Public Library is fine-free: items automatically renew as long as no one else has a hold on them. There are no overdue fines to worry about. Patrons are only responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged materials. The fine-free policy applies to all circulating items and is one of the features recognized in the library's 2018 National Medal award.
What is La Esquina Latina?
La Esquina Latina (Spanish Corner) is Georgetown Public Library's dedicated Spanish-language resource section. It offers the library's latest Spanish-language book acquisitions alongside curated bilingual internet resources covering health (Salud), government information (Gobierno), news (Noticias), English-language learning (Aprender Inglés), education (Educación para todos), and database access (Base de Datos). The section reflects Georgetown's growing Hispanic community and the library's commitment to welcoming all residents.
