About Kingsport Public Library and Archives

The Kingsport Public Library was born from a community effort in 1919 when five women formed the Kingsport Book Club. On August 1, 1921, they opened the library in the basement of the Community YMCA with just 400 books and 41 family members. On March 15, 1929, the library passed from private to municipal ownership. After decades of growth, the library recently relocated to its modern facility at Fort Henry Mall, where it continues to serve Sullivan County's Kingsport community with approximately 101,250 volumes circulating over 264,250 items per year.

The library is also home to the Kingsport Archives — a dedicated institution preserving local history, maps, microfilm, and genealogical records in the Palmer Center. Patrons have access to Ancestry.com, Fold3, and extensive local history databases alongside modern services including eBooks and audiobooks via Hoopla and OverDrive, streaming films on Kanopy, and a "Books to Your Door" homebound delivery program.
