📖 About Parkston Public Library
The Parkston Public Library is the public library of Parkston, South Dakota, a predominantly German-Russian community of roughly 1,500 in the rolling prairies of Hutchinson County. The library is housed in a city-owned building on West Main Street and is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees that meets quarterly. Its collection covers fiction and non-fiction for all ages — including large-print books, DVDs, games and puzzles — and interlibrary loan through South Dakota's statewide system can bring in titles not held locally. The library's signature achievement is a digitization project completed with 2021 ARPA funding: microfilm of the Parkston Advance dating from 1880 through 2018 was scanned and published online at parkstonsd.historyarchives.online, giving genealogists and historians free, searchable access to nearly 140 years of the county-seat newspaper. Patrons can also borrow ebooks and audiobooks through the South Dakota Titles to Go (OverDrive/Libby) program and tap the South Dakota State Library's full suite of research databases, available free to any South Dakotan by geographic IP.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Parkston Advance digital archive and how do I access it?
Using a 2021 ARPA grant, the Parkston Public Library digitized microfilm of the Parkston Advance newspaper covering 1880 through 2018 — nearly 140 years of Hutchinson County history. The archive is freely searchable online at parkstonsd.historyarchives.online and requires no library card or login.
Can I check out ebooks without coming into the library?
Yes. With your Parkston library patron number you can log in to South Dakota Titles to Go (southdakota.lib.overdrive.com) and borrow ebooks and audiobooks instantly on any device. The state spends $5,000 a month on new titles. If a title is checked out you can join a waitlist, which signals the state to buy additional copies.
Does the library offer printing and faxing?
Yes. The library has public computers with Microsoft Office and free internet access, and staff can print documents in black-and-white or color for a small fee. Faxing and scanning — including saving files to a USB drive — are also available.
What is the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program?
It is a national early-literacy initiative the library participates in. Parents and caregivers read any books — repeats count — to their child before kindergarten, with a goal of 1,000 total reads. At every 100-book milestone the library has rewards in place. Reading just one book per night gets you to 365 in a year, making the goal easily achievable before a child turns five.
