📖 About Huron Public Library
The Huron Public Library grew out of a 1907 public vote to establish a city library. In 1908 the Huron City Commission accepted Andrew Carnegie's offer of $10,000 to construct a free library building, and the resulting Carnegie library opened to the public on September 3, 1909, serving the community for more than half a century. That original building was razed in the fall of 1965 to make way for a modern replacement, and the present library at 521 Dakota Avenue South was dedicated on September 18, 1966. Today the library is operated by the City of Huron and serves both the city and the surrounding Beadle County, lending books, ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and DVDs while maintaining a strong genealogy and local-history collection. It participates in the statewide South Dakota Titles to Go digital consortium and hosts the monthly meetings of the Beadle County Genealogy Group.
