📖 About Union County Library

Union County Library is the public library system serving Monroe and the fast-growing suburbs of southeastern Union County, North Carolina. The system traces its roots to the 1930s: in May 1939 the Waxhaw library joined with libraries in Monroe and Marshville to form a county system, and in 1967 the library became a department of Union County government. Director Barbara Johnson, hired in 1968, drove the growth of the Monroe building and its collection into a new era. Today the Main branch anchors four locations — the Main Library in Monroe, the Lois Morgan Edwards Memorial Library in Marshville, the Union West Regional Library in Indian Trail and the Southwest Regional Library in Waxhaw. Inside the Monroe building are a genealogy area with a fireplace, a meeting room, a toddler area with a silo play feature and two study rooms, all sharing one countywide card and TLC catalog.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reserve a study room, and how do meeting room bookings work?

Study rooms at the Monroe Main Library and other branches are available first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved ahead of time. Meeting rooms can be requested by Union County resident cardholders, local nonprofits and government partners; reservations must be submitted at least 30 but no more than 90 days in advance and are limited to a maximum of four hours. See our guide on how to book a library study room.

Where is the Union County Library genealogy collection, and what does it hold?

Genealogy and local history live in the Dickerson Room inside the Main Library at 316 E Windsor Street in Monroe. Named for the Norven Kennedy Dickerson family, whose trust helped fund the library's expansion, the room has its own fireplace and is the county system's home for family-history and Union County research.

How many Union County Library locations are there, and does one card work at all of them?

The system has four locations: the Main Library in Monroe, the Lois Morgan Edwards Memorial Library in Marshville, the Union West Regional Library in Indian Trail and the Southwest Regional Library in Waxhaw. A single Union County library card and the shared online catalog work across all four, so you can place holds and pick them up at whichever branch is closest.

What are the Main Library's hours in Monroe?

The Monroe Main Library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Hours at the Marshville, Indian Trail and Waxhaw branches can differ, so check the branch you plan to visit before you go.

I can't get to the library in person — can Union County residents still get books?

Yes. The library runs an Outreach services van, which replaced the old bookmobile in 1995, delivering materials to homebound patrons, preschools, day cares, after-school programs and retirement centers. Cardholders can also borrow e-books and audiobooks from home through Libby, hoopla and Kanopy.
