📖 About Chapel Hill Public Library

The Chapel Hill Public Library is the Town of Chapel Hill's municipal library, tracing its roots to a small collection that opened in the Hill House on West Franklin Street in 1958 to supplement the university's holdings with children's books and popular reading. It moved to a dedicated building on East Franklin Street in 1967 and relocated to its current home in Pritchard Park in 1994. From 2011 to 2013 the library operated out of University Place mall while the Pritchard Park building underwent a major renovation and expansion designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, reopening in 2013 as the modern 63,000-square-foot facility used today. It is a Town department (not part of a county system), and its collections, programs and meeting spaces make it one of the most heavily used libraries in the state.
